THE ‘MISSED CALL’ PHENOMENON

by Vijoy Alexander

The ‘Missed Call’ phenomenon is a ‘Jugadi’ concept innovated and used mainly by Indians. The caller dial a number and when it rings once or twice he cuts the call; naturally, the person on the other end will call back; thus saves money by the caller. It is called Jugad.

Chotukool is a low-cost solution to preserving perishable foods for longer periods, mainly meant for villages who had never used a refrigerator before. Chotukool is the brainchild of Gopalan Sunderraman, Executive Vice President of Godrej & Boyce Manufacturing, a 100-year-old company based in Mumbai, India.  Chotukool is a 45-liter plastic container that can cool food to around 8 to 10 degrees on a 12-volt battery. Abandoning the compressor technology used in domestic fridges, it uses a thermoelectric or solid state cooling system. It does not have a front opening door but opens from the top to ensure that the maximum amount of cool air remains in the container when opened.  Chottucool the prestigious Golden Edison Awards. It is also a classic example of Jugadi.

What is Jugadi?

Jugaad is a native Hindi word and which has become a buzzword all over the world and especially in management fields. It is the solution from out of the box thinking. It is the need of the hour, quick and using the locally available resources to fix the problems. ” Says a former Deputy Chief Engineer, Mr. Manoj Charantimath. He continues ” Developed countries have a routine and standard lifestyles with a set of solutions say X, Y, and Z and they use the best out of them. If any small problem arises in their lifestyles, they panic as they are not used to such problems.

India is a developing country, every day one or the other person encounters typical problems. Solving the problems is part of their life. Different situations inspire ingenious solutions. To solve these problems one doesn’t need any special skills, big investments, in fact, the solutions are unplanned. They are intuitive and sixth sense solutions. It is a frugal innovation. They look very simple but very useful. “

According to Wikipedia ” Jugaad (alternatively Juggaar) is a colloquial Hindi (Devanagari: जुगाड़) and Punjabi word, which has various meanings depending on the situation. Roughly translated, jugaad is a “hack.”[1] It could also refer to an innovative fix or a simple workaround, a solution that bends the rules, or a resource that can be used in such a way. It is also often used to signify creativity: to make existing things work, or to create new things with meager resources.”. Recently, the word Jugaad is added to the Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary too.

Jugad is a very raw innovative product or system invented for the immediate use. For example, a water bottle can be converted into a water spray.  Whether it involves broken belt buckles that have been replaced with forks, small chairs tied to the front of motorcycles to provide extra seating, or washing machines used to churn out the butter. Have you ever thought of fixing a cycle bell on your motorbike when the honk was not working? Examples of jugaad can be seen every day in India.

The world famous Dabbawallah of Mumbai is the prime example of Jugaad. The dabbawalas collect hot lunches in lunchbox from homes and restaurants and deliver to people at work in India. The empty boxes will be collected and returned to home before the worker reaches home. It is a network of over 5000 people delivering over 8 million lunches every year for the last 127 years. The error rate is 1 in 16 Million.

Around 8 million lunches are delivered every year by dabbawalas ( ) … And no better example of this intricate system shines through than in Mumbai. … process an efficient breeze for the last 127 years, feeding thousands daily.

Jugaad’s primitive version was an innovation out of situation especially for manipulation in one way or other. For example, empty mineral water bottles were used to refill ordinary water with a sealed cap and sold for a premium price.

Over the years the concept has changed from cunning to ingenious. The corporates and business schools refer the term ‘Jugaad’ as ‘ Crisis Management’ for ‘ Frugal Innovation’. In short, it is a ‘ make it with what you have to get it run.

The main problem with such innovations are it is not accepted widely and cannot be fitted to every situation. According to Rishikesha T Krishnan, a professor at IIM Bangalore, products made from jugaad do not count as innovation because they lack the ability to scale and do not fit with the aspirations of the mainstream Indian consumer.

But these small efforts can contribute to a larger innovation, at least one out of a thousand.

HOW MONEY INFLUENCES OUR FAMILY LIFE

HOW MONEY INFLUENCES OUR FAMILY LIFE

By Vijoy Alexander

Money is an inevitable evil. Without that nobody can live; if you have less or more it can make havoc in your life.

The family is the foundation of human life. Forget about Adam and Eve, or the early families in the Bible like Abraham and Sarah. Let us come to the current scenario. When we were young our parents brought us up. We ate together, slept in the same house, shared with our siblings. A gala life. Never knew any pinch or the importance of money. As we grew we came to know the importance of money which plays in our everyday life. When money dominates naturally conflicts starts. Anything important can potentially start conflicts. When parents have more and enough money children will start fighting for it. On the other hand, if parents are penniless they end up in old age homes and there won’t be any trace of the children who enjoyed the fruits of their efforts and lives.  This is one of those unfortunate events that we all dislike when we hear it, but we see people do this time and time again.  So having money and not having money, both create conflicts in the family.

What are the solutions?

“Studies have shown that financial concerns are among the most common sources of disagreement for couples. And according to the 2014 APA Stress in America survey1, almost a third of adults with partners (31 percent) reported that money is a major source of conflict in their relationship. But money doesn’t have to be a wedge in your relationship. With practice, you and your partner can learn to talk about finances in a healthier, more satisfying way. ” commented in an article of American Psychological Association.

There are many suggestions by different people in various categories of life, but  here we mention a few which we feel as very important:

Create a Detailed Budget

A detailed budget and maintenance of daily accounts will be a practical solution. Budget means ‘ expected’ income and expenditure. Accounts are your daily expenses and income.  It is better you cross-check with your income with your budgetary income or expenses with budgetary expenses.

Set some Goals and Rules

Once you have your budget and accounts are there, it is easy to put some rules as well. For eg.

1.  Average daily expenses for the house including food should not exceed than $____ per day or week.

2. Take yourselves an allowance of $____ per month for personal expense, Transport, Coffee out etc. This applies to each adult individual. If hits on a ceiling, then that is it; no enhancement, no advance and no loans.

3. Separate budget should be prepared for Children’s education, sickness, extracurricular activities etc.

4. Also for House Loan, Car Loar, Personal Loan etc

5. If you are planning to buy a house or new car or go for a vacation, budgeting for it also will ease your finances. You need to find a way for its finance too.

6. Agree that any expenses more than, say $100 will be discussed prior to its execution, if not budgeted.

Set up a Contingency Fund

It is very important to have a contingency fund to face any unforeseen events, such as medical, loss of vehicle and its replacement, natural calamities, etc. When you budget a percentage of the total income should be transferred to this account regularly every month and it should be not be touched whatever the case may be. Later this fund can be converted to easily soluble  assets such as bonds, bank deposits etc

Finally, if your parents are living and even if they do not need any financial assistance, it is advisable to keep a percentage of your income for them also. Either you can add this amount to contingency fund or give them once in a while as a gift. They need your financial, physical and mental help in their old age.

Realize that these plans are not a perfect solution, but it will ease your tensions and worries and will help you to manage what you don’t agree.

THE LAND WHERE DEATH IS AFRAID TO VISIT

By Vijoy Alexander

There is a place where death is afraid to visit very often. One in 3 makes over 90. Enjoy the life, that is their motto. They have the lowest rates of Cancer and dementia. Heart diseases, depression are not common while physically active into their old age. On an average the people here in this wonderful island live 10 years longer than in Europe and America.

I am talking about a small island in Greece called Ikaria. According to mythology, the island is named after Icarus, the young man in Greek mythology who flew too close to the sun using wax wings and plunged into the sea, close to Ikaria.  According to Wikipedia “It is one of the middle islands of the northern Aegean, 255.303 square kilometres (98.573 sq mi) in area with 102 miles (164 kilometres) of coastline and a population of 8,312 inhabitants. The topography is a contrast between verdant slopes and barren steep rocks. The island is mountainous for the most part. It is traversed by the Aetheras range, whose highest summit is 1,037 metres (3,402 feet). Most of its villages are nestled in the plains near the coast, with some in the mountains.” The island is about 30 miles away from Turkish Coast. There are direct flights from Athens to Ikaria though both sea and road transport are also convenient.

WHY  LONG LIFE?

Many has studied the reason for this long life of Ikarians. One of the studies by Dr. Christina Chrysohoou, a member of Ikaria studies under University of Athens and a cardiologist at the university found that the Ikarian diet featured a lot of beans and not much meat or refined sugar. The locals also feast on locally grown and wild greens, some of which contain 10 times more antioxidants than are found in red wine, as well as potatoes and goat’s milk. The Ikarians drink a lot of herb tea and small quantities of coffee; daily calorie consumption is not high. The island especially the villages are not affected by the westernised way of living. Dr. Chrysohoou says the Ikarian habit of taking afternoon naps may reduce the risk of heart disease by almost 40%.

Chrysohoou’s preliminary studies revealed that 80% of Ikarian males between the ages of 65 and 100 were still having sex. And, of those, a quarter did so with “good duration” and “achievement”. “We found that most males between 65 and 88 reported sexual activity, but after the age of 90, very few continued to have sex.”

Many in medical science believe that only 25% of your longevity is determined by your genetics. They think the other 75% comes down to how and where you live.

According to a local resident “We keep the old people with us. There is an old people’s home, but the only people there are those who have lost all their family. It would shame us to put an old person in a home. That’s the reason for longevity. “To have your family around you makes you feel stronger and more secure.”
